• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

GE view

Hi Rhys,

Send me a PM and I will attach Robbie's EarthProxy.exe. Same goes for anyone else.

Unlike the original version of GE View which opened Google Earth in your web browser (Google pulled the plug on that last December), this version works with Google Earth desktop client. Your web browser need not be open.

EarthProxy is very simple to use and when you're flying, its the same as the original GE View. You need to download Google Earth as a prerequisite of course.

It's not the final version yet - that will include a full duplex http.dll as well as joystick HAT capability that will rotate the Google Earth view according to movement of the HAT button.

When talking about GE View, I always like to take the opportunity to encourage folks to also look through Marcin Lizer's work at WebSimconnect.

Apologies for the delay.

Bob

For any math junkie out there, here's my contribution to Robbie's Flight Sim - Google Earth application, the 3D rotation solutions.

Hi:
I've just discovered this jewel. A great tool to improve the immersion in the VFR flights. I'm thinking to use a second monitor with a 2D panel from FSX and let the main monitor for google earth.

One question: Is there any plan to integrate the track IR in Google Earth?

Thank you.

Regards.

Hello Jose,

No plans to integrate with track IR. We have a working version with Oculus Rift but haven't done much with that for about a year.

Bob

GE View and Earth Proxy:

For all of you that have asked about EarthProxy, I apologize for the long delay - I haven't been near my desktop pc in several months.

EarthProxy is the update to GE View that uses the desktop client version of Google Earth instead of the web browser Google Earth Javascript API that Google killed last December.

Instructions:

1) Download and install the latest version of Google Earth. I'm running version 7.1.5.1557
2) Unzip the attached file. Place HttpX.dll into the modules folder of FSX. EarthProxy.exe can be placed anywhere.
3) Edit your dll.xml file to include the following lines
Code:
  <Launch.Addon>
    <Name>HttpX</Name>
    <Disabled>False</Disabled>
    <ManualLoad>False</ManualLoad>
    <Path>Modules\HttpX.dll</Path>
    <DllStartName>module_init</DllStartName>
    <DllStopName>module_deinit</DllStopName>
  </Launch.Addon>
dll.xml is often found in the following path C: > Users > Your Name > AppData > Roaming > Microsoft > FSX

After that is done, each time you want to run GE View, do the following:

1) Launch FSX and also Google Earth
2) double click on EarthProxy.exe. Then click START, then click Open KML File. Google Earth should then rotate to the position of the aircraft.
3) When the flight is over, click STOP and close the EarthProxy window.

I have just now tested this using FSXA in my new upgrade to Windows 10*. Runs fine in Win 10 as it does with Win 7. Last year, I tested EarthProxy with P3D and Win 7 and it ran well with that configuration. However, EarthProxy won't work with FS9.

Hope you continue to enjoy GE View.

Bob

*but having mostly bad luck getting FSXA to open in Win 10 ... going to check out AVSIM to read thru the Win 10 threads...

Worked a charm. Thanks very much.

Just needed to remember to change the fly-to speed in the navigation options to get the right update speed.

Thanks for that reminder! Google Earth Fly-To Speed can be set by going to Tools - Options - Navigation and adjusting the slider bar. I set mine to 3.9000 and it looks fine.

For one reason or another, it does not work for me:(.
But just one question: what is different from the GE Earth Tracker that still works fine here?

Roby,

I'm afraid that I do not know what GE Earth Tracker does. As for GE View, you can see what it does by looking here.

I like to to overlay the instrument panel over the GE view and do my whole flight with that view, therefore is really important the ability to control the camera minimum height which seems fixed at 50 meters AGL in the earthproxy and I havent figured out a way to change it while in the GE view editing the html file you can get it right where you want it.

Hi rpmc, Has there been any further development on the earthproxy HAT switch capability? Sorry to be impatient, I'm currently learning to fly (PPL-H) and this tool has been extremely valuable to me. Being able to fly to the same places at home on sim as I have just done in real life has really helped me to learn. With the HAT switch available, this will truly be a fantastic product! Also wondering? Do you know of any way to increase the cache sizes on Google Earth above 2000MB to allow faster/further viewpoint rendering? I'm pretty certain I have a decent enough PC and fast enough fibre optic internet to handle it, yet I just feel it could be even better if this was improved...

I'll know a bit more sometime next week when I have a chance to discuss with Robbie (GE View and Earth Proxy author). Bob

Hi Bob,
I am facing a new issue, I have changed my laptop and its also an old one. The problem is that the GE desktop client and FSX both run smoothly when launched independently but when I link them through the GE proxy tool, the performance of FSX gets effected and it runs with jumping behavior instead of moving steady. Do you have any remedy?

Hello Younas,

I do not know much of anything about system resources and old laptops, but it's obvious that it's overwhelming your graphics capability to render continuously changing Google Earth imagery and Flight Simulator views at the same time. I guess you can try limiting the FS graphics display (Options > Settings > Display > Graphics) to a Very Low to Minimal setting to see if that helps.

There are also settings in Google Earth that you should experiment with such as "Use high quality terrain (disable for quicker resolution and faster rendering)", Anisotropic Filtering, and maybe Cache - but, again, I don't know enough to offer an informed recommendation regarding memory cache.

You can even completely minimize the Flight Sim window (first, un-check "Pause on task switch" in Options > Settings > General > Program), but then, you lose flight sim instrument information.

Hi there,
I'm coming very late to this discussion but I had come across GE View which led me here. Is Earthproxy still on the go? If it is where would I get it from? GE View looked pretty impressive on youtube (obviously I was too late to try it myself as Google pulled the plug on it) and I'm keen to see what Earthproxy is like by way of comparison. Thanks in anticipation.

The EarthProxy files are attached to response #6 (above) in this thread.

For an update on HttpX 2.0 that will enable 360 degree pan view of the Google Earth image, see this posting.

Was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Earthproxy links fine with my FSX SP2 and Earth Desktop. What I'm experiencing is that the second either Earth or Earthproxy are started, FSX loses both my yoke and rudder and I am left with just my mouse. Plugging and unplugging (they are both USB based) does not reengage them with FSX as is typically the case when the earth programs are not being utilized. I've tried loading the three softwares in different sequences, and the joystick control in earth is disabled, all without any luck. Any insight into my issue would be most appreciated. I firmly believe that this world mapping / 3d terrain is truely the future for flight simming, but I won't do it with just a mouse....

thanks, Brian
