• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Max Defiant Project

There are a lot of Blender projects being posted here, not that many aircraft but very nice ones indeed. I thought I would post my new project from the start with the possibility of getting advice as well as showing some modeling methods for some of those new with Max. A lot of this will also work in gMax. I'm not the greatest modeler, I'm still learning after eleven years playing with FSDS, gMax and Max but I thought this would be fun.

I'm not naming the aircraft, thought I would leave it to viewers of this thread to guess. Those of you who know me will know what it is so please refrain from spilling the beans. I don't think it will be to hard to guess at least with my next post it should be quite recognizable.

Let me get this out of the way right up front. I don't sit in front of the computer 24/7 so it will be slow going. Yes it will have a VC with 3d gauges. It will be for FSX/P3D v1.4 and a native version for P3D v2.5, I don't know about v3 but probably. Sorry no FS9 but when it is completed I'll gladly supply the source if someone wants to downgrade it to FS9 and yes it will be freeware.

Hope you like what will follow ;) over the next weeks, :) months, :( years......

Paul

This is what I call the roughing out part. Spline modeling with a Surface Modifier (not shown) and Symmetry Modifier.

Looks great Paul! Although I'm not entirely certain what it is exactly

Good start. My guess from just looking now, going by the cockpit; is it a ME109 (or BF109)?

Looks like a Boulton Paul Defiant, but without the turret modelled yet.
(fingers crossed it is!)

Is...is that a split front windscreen on a one-man fighter cockpit? What monster would design something like this?

Very good Dave and I will make the turret model but this was a special version built specifically for the Battle of Britain the Boulton Paul P.94, prototype Defiant K8310. It probably would have made a good fighter without the added weight of the turret but Britain had plenty of aircraft just not enough pilots.

One-piece curved and not armoured? What a splendid notion for a photo reconnaissance bird and a rotten one for a fighter.

These early shots show a method I still haven't found an equivalent in Blender: cross-sectional spline modelling. It's my favourite in Gmax/Max.

I do love spline modeling. It takes a bit of getting used to but once you get the hang of it you can make a nice wing in short order.

More pictures showing the method for those interested.

Spline modeling with the surface modifier applied.

Added a few more details.

Working the curves on the wing spline. This shows the vertex handles that adjust the various curves.

Symmetry is your friend. By using symmetry I need only model one side of the aircraft. You can see the modifier applied to the wheels.

Cheers F747fly, that's exactly what I mean. Not that I'm using Blender, but I like to think these methods are available to those who do. :wizard:

It's nice to show it somewhat, perhaps someone likes it but I haven't used it.

Paul the aircraft looks awsome! Really loving how it looks :)

I must admit I was unfamiliar with the P.94, so had to do a bit of Googling! Very interesting.
Nice work so far. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses.:)

I decided to put off purchase of P3D v3.0 this month in favor of purchasing the pilot's handbook and service manual for the Defiant. Unfortunately the download link is broken. I sent an email to Peter Gill about the problem and he is away on business until next weekend. I feel like a child waiting on Christmas. :(

That's an unfortunate hold up in another wise good looking project... :(
