• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

How to Create Loft Edge using 3Ds max (Tutorial needed)

Hello guys,
Can any one Help me or Suggest a PDF or Video tutorial (Except 2014 tutorial ) to how to create Loft Edges using 3ds max ?

Regards

Add a box SHAPE to the size you want, convert to spline, remove the bottom, left and right edge > align pivot to centre of remaining edge > click the edge you want to loft and go to "Standard Objects", in the drop down, select "Compound Objects" then "Loft", press H on keyboard, select your edge.

If you want to loft multiple lines at once, select them all then go to modifier list and select "Sweep".

This is as far as I'm willing to explain to you, although the process is pretty much the full task - the 2014 tutorial is still relevant.

In 3dsMax I find using Sweep and the custom shape a lot easier and quicker than Loft. Same thing goes with Loft, make a box, convert to spline, and remove the bottom edges...but then instead of Loft, use the rollout an select Sweep. (make sure you have generate mapping co-ordinates checked) With Sweep, you can attach multiple splines together. If you need to adjust something, click back down in the stack and click the test tube looking icon until the tube is completely full and everything in the stack will be shown, so you can move the vertices around until you are happy. Once you are happy with everything, just collapse the stack.

IIUC, this type of task is an interesting challenge in any 3D application, based on what info can be found on the internet. :scratchch:

Even Sketchup requires plugin Ruby scripting to do this:

As a FS Developer 'Search' shows you have recently been working with G-Polys, I am wondering if you have seen Tic's excellent tutorial on this thread:

https://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/lofts-ground-poly-edges.424454/

I hope that latter link might prove helpful with your current task. :)

Thanks for your reply Nater , I'm very Interested to learn how to use Sweep command to create edges could you please Suggest me step by step tutorial ?

Thank you Gary, yes I'm working on OIFM airport (Isfahan Intl Airport /Iran) for P3D v4 , Attach some shots for you , thanks for Sharing this tutorial link but unfortunately All pics are not clear for me they are water masked with photobucket Could you please save them and send them All to me ?

Thanks for your reply , I used Edge method and find out that i have to select Segments and make them loft one by one for example i should select Arc segment and create Loft , then select the Straight segments and make them loft , How you explain this ? is there any way to make them at once ? take a look at this photo you will notice that i used separate lofts an segments.

@Majid , take a look at this video. the last part shows using a spline to create the shape you need...

Thanks Nater for video , I watched it till end but this never show anything about Sweep Texturing , I need to know to texture curved sweep .

Which specific images are not clear due to a Photobucket 'watermark' (or icon) ? :scratchch

Please attach a link to the thread, or to the wiki / PDF containing the watermark /icon (or missing ?) images, and I will try to see if I have an archived copy of the originals. :coffee:

[EDITED]

IIRC images in this thread were intact a couple of days ago, and now they have been mangled by Photobucket. :banghead:

AFAIK, (2) PDF tutorials (with high resolution / 'clear' images) that resulted from Tics posts in the linked thread above are linked here: :pushpin:

@Majid when texturing make sure that "Generate Texture Co-ordinants" is checked. Leave "Use Real World un-checked." Once you apply your material, use the UVW edit modifier and adjust to fit your texture.

If you want to loft multiple lines at once, select them all then go to modifier list and select "Sweep". Same process as creating a loft really except you add Sweep to all selected lines instead of Loft one by one. In the options dialogue of Sweep, you'll see "Use real world map size" check it.

Gary - you really need to relax with these long winded replies if they are even relevant...half of your last post was an un-related lecture. Such long responses are not required for someone wanting a quick rundown on the Sweep modifier.

NOTAM:

Please stop using external image storage websites that inevitably "bait-and-switch", leaving the FS Developer knowledge base incomplete when such websites substitute images that alter, and IMHO misrepresent the authors original image until one registers and/or pays a fee.

Such misrepresentations of the authors original image via software may be regarded as a violation of the authors copyright, and may be interpreted as a form of malware or even ransomware. :stirthepo

Instead, please use 'safe' free "file download" websites to link images to forum posts if they exceed the size limits of FSDeveloper.

Thank you Gary, I already read this two tutorials , this method (Loft I mean) its not suitable for big projects with lots of tight and near 90 degrees angels (my opinion ) , therefore I need to Learn another method something like Sweep for two reasons first get ride of texture mess in angles and second is lofting method is really time consuming for me to build edges. take a look at shot i Attach this is the texture problem with Loft.

just follow your advise , create sweep perfectly and its very easy to build but there is another problem , The texture is not following sweep direction when use UVW map.

This will just make it more hands on for Majid - "Real World Map Size" normalises the texture so it's "uniform" - you NEVER should have this un-checked.

I guess this Option should be uncheck , please take a look these shots :

@Majid once you check generate texture coord. do not use UVW Map, instead use Unwrap UVW, then edit UVW.If you use UVW Map, you will loose the ability to have the texture follow the curve.

Agreed, applying a UVW Map will overwrite the automatic mapping applied when creating the Loft, whereas UV Unwrap lets you edit the automatic mapping.

Hi Majid:

Sorry, but I do not have an archived copy of the original thread linked above containing Tic's images, as I thought it might be better to instead just download the (2) PDF tutorials cited above, since Tic had insisted in that thread he would prefer to later provide a more comprehensive explanation ...which became the 2-part "2014" PDFs. :pushpin:

Perhaps some time in the future I will post a tutorial on how this process may be done more easily within Sketchup. ;)

PS: Please note that I have 'transplanted' a part of my prior post above ...to another thread:

Hi Gary
No matter I'm decided to use Sweep method this is very easier than loft , and that is good news that you have this intention to use Sketchup instead, this i a lot easier than other apps like gmax or 3ds max i know how to use it very well.
