• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA Blackfin Sailfish (1930s Racer)

Cool! Thanks, Paul. I am modeling in Max 2016 and I have the P3D V2 and V3 SDKs, but I wasn't sure whether or not I needed the other as well.

I'm really just trying to get a good read on a standard FSX material setup.

2016 may not be supported, 2015 is the latest listed in the SDK. You'll have to try it and let us know if it works for those who may want to opt for 2016.

Would anyone do me a small favor and check out Prepar3D's SDKs and try to download V1.4? I've tried twice and when I get to installing it, the installer gives me an error message. So perhaps it is being corrupted during download because my internet is slow, but I would really like to make sure that there isn't something wrong with the installer package.

I'll try to help you as best I can.
First, what is the error message you are getting and what OS are you running? Are you installing with administrative privilege? Stupid question but I have to ask, you are downloading the SDK from LM correct?
Do you have v2.5 or v3.0 already installed? You will need one of these installed first because they are your only export link with Max. After exporting from Max you must use the v1.4 SDK for compilation for FSX compatibility. It's more important that you can confirm exporting from Max first.
You can PM me if you want some one-on-one.

Here's an updated cockpit shot. Oh, and I named it Sailfish . . .

Looks great! The name sorta reminds me if the MiG-21, which was called Fishbed (onliest Aircraft I know with the word fish in it). Fishsail seams appropriate with that wing structure. Am I right in saying it has four wings (do I remember correctly from the first page)? Personally I like bames like Thunderchief better, but tgose kinda names wouldn't fit a. 1930s fighter. Cool name nevrr the less!

LOL @ "Fishsail"! I like it . . .:D

This is the first of a series of projects I have planned. There are two more lined up that I want to do, both of which will be era-specific aircraft.

Yes, it does have four wings. I didn't originally intend any specific design but it just evolved that way. This thread will show you where the aircraft began.

Fishsail.... sail made out of fish? I do appologize for that typo....
In some aspect it kinda reminds me of the F4F, coming to think of it.... it looks very sleek! very well done!

Thanks, F747. Little, quick, and agile. That's what it's made for.;)

I'm wondering if anyone would know what switches and such are necessary for something like this cockpit. I'm specifically wondering about engine equipment. I have: battery, starter, primer, generator, ignition, and all light switches. All the mechanical stuff (throttle, flaps, etc) I already have, right now I'm just wondering about things that go "click". I'm sure I need at least one or two others, although for the life of me I can't remember what I'm missing. I'm gonna go check the sim aircraft a bit, but if anyone thinks of anything I'm missing I'd love to know!

Okay, fuel valve! As in cutoff and selector? Good idea, will get right on that. . . and the prop pitch, mixture, and throttle are all on the left side of the cockpit.;)

What year did electric wobble (or just fuel) pumps become available? I'm running out of room for levers . . .

In other news, I got it into the sim. Sadly, it flies like a winged brick, nose up and stalling all the way down. And that was only AFTER I had slewed it up, since it tends to snap its gear upon loading. It's too bad it does that, because before I can deal with that I'll need to deal with the inverted polys and missing portions (not even sure what's wrong yet) of the model.

Ahhh... the joys of flight sim modelling.o_O

Ahh well another brick in the wall... euhm sim I mean ;) Well I guess you know better what to do then I do because of the experience you have... I just remember my first aircraft to be exported to FSX just kept on sinking and twisting like a mad man because I hand't propperly set the contact-points.... :D

Contact points are a source of grief for me, but airfiles (being not of science, but of sorcery) in general I consider heinous. That why I use AirWrench. But sadly, it's days seem to be numbered.

Here is how I do it as taught to me by Milton Shupe.

1. Open the Max model.
2. Open the text editor (Notepad ++ for me).
3. Open the calculator.
4. Start the sim and load the model then go to exterior view.

*5. In Max, using the datum reference point of 0,0,0 lay out tapes to measure the distance from the datum reference point to the contact point for X,Y,Z.
6. I work in meters but the sim requires feet so the need for the calculator to convert.
7. Using notepad I edit the aircraft.cfg from my measurements then save it.
8. In the sim refresh the aircraft (I have the key command Ctri+Shift+R set for this) and watch the results.

Repeat steps 5 - 8 as needed.

* I usually set this on the line of thrust depending on where the engine or engines are located and at the highest point of the camber line on the wing chord.

Pretty simple and affective I think.

Generally how I've done it in the past. However, the problems really arise when I start adding in the gear compression. I seem to recall a theory stating around 2/3 compression sitting on the ground. My issue is really that I haven't added any actual compression to the model, I just want to see it sitting there on the tarmac as is. Unfortunately, the sim seems to detest it when the gear compression isn't present (0.00 for all compression entries). So I have a few mental mutations to make to get this right. I'll get it, it's just gonna take a bit.

As a side question: should I start a new thread in the CFG section for this, ask here, or should the whole thread be moved?

Since it is all under the heading of modelling and it is for the same model I don't see any reason to start a new thread unless you just want to.

Just a quick comment from me, yesterday I modified the CPs of my A350 slightly, she was sinking about an inch into the ground, with the latest development release of MCX. You might want to take a look at that ;)
