• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v2 Bombardier Challenger 605

LOL I'm really just learning to model. I also just started painting some textures and to my surprise, it's kind of fun! :D I've spent the last 2 days on the nose alone, maybe it's time to move on to another part? :p But yeah, textures make all the difference. Just adding the little dirt smear and oil stain here and there really brings it to life.

when all your work is shifted towards one thing alone, you can get a lot of work done!! it already looks payware quality!

don't do what I did man, I have a load of projects I work on and I get so overwhelmed with details that I drives me insane and I just have to call it quits sometimes...sometime this month i'm going to have to DECIDE to drop some projects out of the loop so I can get more work done on my current project.

Nice work and about the texturing...don't start it until the external model is fully completed. Texture mapping is two times more involved than 3D modeling. It could take you several hours to texture map a fuselage and wings but if you see an error in some part later on...guess what? You'll have to re-texture that entire part from scratch possibly risking issues with the rest of the texture mapping.

Texture mapping is really like walking on eggs, if you aren't careful, well, you know what will happen.

Well, let's just say I've made that mistake before by being too eager and jumping in to the textures before my external model was complete...definitely not a good idea. I'm paying closer attention this time, and any part I'm texturing is checked 100% complete BEFORE I start painting. Anyway, do you guys use GIMP or Photoshop for your textures? I'm really surprised at how well GIMP does with these things. :)

GIMP all the way.

Granted, being a commercial product, Photoshop does stuff better and more elaborately in most regards, but for me, the "open source" spirit always outweighs this.
(Also, pricetag!)

Might try a vector graphics tool like Inkscape for textures to see how it does with MSFS textures. In theory, it should greatly diminish loss of sharpness when downsizing textures for FS9.

I also found this neat little .DDS plugin for Gimp that lets you export DIRECTLY to .DDS. All you have to do is flip the image vertically and hit 'Export". It's saved me quite a bit of time and it works just as well as Imagetool or DXTBMP. :)

66,700 polys. It's too bad I decided to make this plane in 3ds Max 2012 because the exporter for that version sometimes crashes when exporting high-poly models. Another lesson learned, I guess. Just won't be adding many more polys! ;) The next project will be started in Max 2010.

I use GIMP always. I prefer version 2.6 of GIMP the rest are seriously screwed up. I have Photoshop but I rarely use it. The reason being is because Photoshop eats up a LOT OF SYSTEM RESOURCES where GIMP is simple and to the point.

I save my work often as there is the suffocation death syndrome...when you click on the menus in gimp on a RARE occurrence the menu will get stuck and GIMP will be for ever frozen.

Hasn't ever happened to me in 2.8. This version even survives crashing plugins!

Yeah, 2.8 is a warrior. I tried installing some plugins once (which didn't work) and a window popped up that said "plugin loading failed" or something and it said the program can't start...So I closed out of it and waited. Then it started up anyway. Weird but awesome...And I also like the functionality of saving in .psd format. That means you can export it and keep working at the same time! (I'm sure PS can do that, but the bottom line is that GIMP is bad***.) ;)

Right now I have to re-map some textures but as soon as I get that done, I'll have some more renders. ;)

Renders out of Max are great, but as I have said in threads past until you show it to me "in-sim" it does not exist.

That said, your model is looking good!

Hi Guy's,
My Challenger 300 has a full VC that might be able to be used.

Richie1935

It will work. Richie, i just used your XLS VC in the Default Dash 8 FSX native and with a viewpoint adj, bingo beautiful finally a Dash 8-1 with VC in FSX. I for one would transplant your VC to this Challenger 605 for sure if only presented with a external as I think the external is excellent quality and the fact I like my Canadian Aviation Challengers and Dash's.

I use 3ds Max 2012. It's great when it isn't crashing and freezing up. Too bad there isn't an sdk for Maya or something like that.

Yea, really. Maya took me all but 5 minutes to make a character back in the day. What kicked me was textures and IK handles. That took some time.

I use blender now because I dont have a valid license for Maya, still have the software though. My buddy has a valid License for Maya, courtesy ABC. Alias owned at that time, I have a version 6 authentication disk from a valid copy but its not worth the risk of getting caught with it pirated (authentication disk and software disk are valid, but the license I would have to repurchase). I really should call him up one day. Been years :)
