• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Düsseldorf Airport

As far as I know the old tower is not in use anymore, ATC moved completely to the new tower in 2002. The new tower is actually the highest in Germany (87m). Nowadays I'm living near the dutch-german border , so the nearest airport for me is Maastricht-Aachen.

Maastricht-Aachen.

Also an airport I've become quit familiar with. Well for what I've read on de.wikipedia I knew it is the highest atc tower in Germany, but I couldn't remember if all atc units had moved up there... On the other hand I've never seen movements in the old tower....

Dispite this being one of those projects that I work on "Ocassionally" I've worked on it the other day, it's he train station (Düsseldorf Flughafen BH)!

Now I've got a question for the Düsseldorf fans. In the olden days, a few years back that is, there was a great spotters deck on the trainstation. It was a great possition to watch (and photograph) aircraft landing on runways 23L and 23R. I can still remember coming there for the first time, the elevator opens and through the big glass window I see a big purple A330 landing! A spectacular moment if I may say so. However the last two times I went spotting the deck was closed, once due to construction and once without any reason, just closed... question is will it ever reopen? I actually really liked that deck, it was great. IMO it's better then the deck on Terminal B, for the distance to aircraft landing and taking off is really minimal...
God I still remember an LH A340 making an emergency stop when I was there (see video below). To this dayI don't know why he sotpped, the flight to New Ark was delayed by a few hours though for maintenance. But I also heard an aircraft making a go around... So it was either a runway incursion or a defect aircraft. I would think someone must know but I've yet to puzzle it out...

Video (yes it's an old camera, but it still works...)

I don't live any where near Dusseldorf, but I have flown in and out of there a few times. I think the observation deck is running and will continue to run in the future, but I'm not sure. It says that it closes at 7 PM and you can't get in 30 Minutes before it closes. He's a page that might help. https://www.dus.com/en/enjoy-dus/flughafenterrasse

And by the way your airport is looking great.

As far as I know the spotter's deck on the train station won't be reopened. The spotter's deck at terminal B had to be reconstructed due to security reasons, and the same has to be done with the train station deck, but nobody wants to pay for that.

Airberlin flight from Miami?
It seems only one deck will remain open...
Thanks BTW :)

Well too bad I guess. Well like we say in the Netherlands: "atleast we still have the pictures" ;)

I need to finish up the details on the trainstation and then I'll slowly start building up towards the west.

These are the buildings I've worked on today:

So let's start with the first one, that would be the engine testing facility. It has some complex structural stuff going on which I still need to build, but the parts at the back are good now... Now I've been in there once, got there with an Airport tour. The wind in there seems to be really bad, but ofcourse it's ment to withstand the thrust of jet engines.

Next to it is the old LTU Hangar 8. As far as I can remember I've only once seen the LTU fleet, as in before 2007. Since then the airline has been taken over by Airberlin, hence their present hub at the airport, and therefor all their assets (A320s and A330s aswell as Hangars) have been registered under the Airberlin name. Currently this hangar is fully owned by Airberlin, and I've seen numerous A330s come out of there or go in. Also I've once noticed a Lufthansa A340-300 being repaired there, which I found odd...

Then there is the shared Hangar next to it. It's fifty percent owned by LH and fifty percent owned by AB. Therefor both companies repair aircraft in here. If my memory serves me correctly there used to be, and there still might be, an old LH Vickers aircraft standing in this hangar...
As far as things go I have, unfortunatelly, never been inside either of these hangars...

Keep in mind though that detailed worked still needs to be done...

Looking great so far. Looking forward to using this when it is realeased. Just a quick question in regards to your ground imagery. Where can I find high quality images like the ones you have here? Thank you

Thanks! Well it's just an SBuilderX plane I use to get the buildings right, I cannot use it for photoreal though...

Today a part I have already discussed actaully... I decided to start with the tower today, which bring a few good thoughts with it. Here is what it looks like. There are two "office boxes" to let ground control and other departments work in.

The big question was detail VS polycount. So for instance I decided the top "BOX" should have modelled edges and the lower one should've those edges on a texture. The reason is that it would influence the polycount too much if I did the lower box like I did the top box...
Same thing goes for the fence around the stairs ofcourse, a texture will suffice...

This also might be a good moment to summarize what I want to achieve with this project and see if it is anywhere near realistic.
So I want to:

- Make all airport buildings
- Make high-definition textures for buildings in the airport and groundtextures
- Make a groundpoly countaining all taxiways, aprons, runways, service roads.
- Make promant parts of the city
- Make the Schwarzbach Wald
- Make 3D grass
- Make traffic such as cars on the Autobahn and the trains on the railway. Aswell as the shuttletrain (which is called the 'skytrain')

I started work on various parts. The terminals (or concourses) have a common check-in hall. This is a round structure that connects nicelly to the skytrain service (located in the inner ring, so to say, of the structure). The check-in hall is a pritty sizable structure and you'll be suprissed how many airlines have check-in counters in it... You can also rent cars in this building, a pritty well known ad a rental company has there is a giraffe with an elephants nose with the text: "immer eine nasenlänge voraus" (which tanslates as "Always one step ahead"). Ofcourse this building connects to the Terminals A (lufthansa and star alliance partners), B (Non-Star Alliance airlines for flights within Europe) and C (Non-Star Alliance airlines, except Turkish Airlines, for intercontinental flights).

From here you could take the skytrain. It's a special monorail system designed by Siemens as H-Bahn (hanging railways). Only two systems of this type of vehicle (as made by Siemens) exist, one exists here at Düsseldorf Airport and the other at the University of Dortmund, though various other versions of hanging railways exist throughout the world ofcourse.

The Skytrain will take you all the way from Terminal C (far end of the check-in area) through Terminal A + B, past Parkhaus P4 and P5, to the Railway station at the other end of the airport.

P4 and P5 might be conidered special structures although I've got little to say about them... good parking space I guess.

those shapes, high detailed models etc :O
demotivational pictures for me xD

Its is beautiful :D, is it intended to pe a payware ot freeware? :)

Thanks!
Well this will in the most likely case be freeware, since I've got no one who would be interested in publishing this and I personally don't think this is at a payware standard.

Plus, freeware makes things much simpler for me, as I can get help with freeware, but not with payware ofcourse.

Wow,... very nice. I used to live in Dusseldorf and flew out of that airport many times. But I don't I would even recognize it today. It looks like it has changed completely from the smaller airport I recall in the 90's.

Thanks! Unfortunately I've never seen the airport in the 90's (for obvious reasons). The first time I came there was probably in 2003 or 2004.... The airport has changed a lot since 1996 actually. All terminals where redesigned slightly after the fire and then in 2000 a big project for redevelopment was started. So in 2000 the railway station was made and in 2002 the skytrain was finished. After that a whole project came to make "airport city" which features a bit of a business park on the airport side. Some things stayed though, such as a mustard factory and the basic layout of the terminals.
But I assume you will recognize the two runway layout, the second runway was completed in the early 90's and has only been lengthened since.

I was in the hangar 7 and 8 yesterday. hangar 7 will be 100% airberlin soon as lufthansa sold it. And no, there is no vickers in it. Yesterdays state it was:

hangar 7: eurowings 320, lufthansa crj, airberlin a320 and dash8.
hangar 8: 2 airberlin 737, 1 a320, 1 a330 (went to abu dhabi at 9:10pm)
