• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Dovetail Games Flight School and Flight Simulator

Doesn't look that amazing does it?

"Flight school is a standalone experience and is not compatible with add-ons or content released for other simulators. We will have more news about DTG Flight Simulator over the coming months"

"There are currently no plans to include third party content in Flight School. That will really be a standalone experience focused on learning to fly. DTG Flight Simulator is a different story, we will absolutely be looking to work with third party developers just like we have been doing with FSX: Steam Edition."

I guess we will have to wait and see how this all plays out.

"Flight School" looks like "Flight! Steam Edition".
It's not the worst idea though. Keep it simple, maybe only offer official DLC and try to port it to consoles or mobile devices to capture a bit of the market. The returns from FS will be invested into the development of DFS. Let's therefor hope that Flight School won't flop, otherwise the "real" simulator is going to be a mild catastrophe.

A current synopsis of Dovetail's information:

Both Flight School and Flight Simulator are based on FSX technology... no MS Flight technology. Release for Flight School is April 2016, available through Windows Store or Steam. There will be an XBOX version of Flight School.

No 3rd party addons for Flight School. There will be 3rd party addons for Flight Simulator, but the availability of an SDK or APIs, their price, and allowance of 'unauthorised' addons has not been discussed. No release date for Flight Simulator other than 2016. No word on sloping runwways, true helicopter flight mode, or other issues absent from FSX. It is unclear if FSX addons will work in Flight Simulator (but I would seriously doubt it). Both Flight School and Flight Simulator will be 64-bit and DirectX11. I don't read if Windows7 or Windows8 are supported.

FSX:SE is not being developed further, but newer addons may be released through Steam.

Thanks for opening the discussion Brandon. :)

I admit being disappointed that it doesn't use the FLIGHT engine. I think there were a lot of advances there, and honestly it indicates to me that they have taken a very conservative course. It's something I will buy, of course, but my gut instinct is that we will still need to look elsewhere for something really new.

Hi Brandon.

64-bit may solve some memory issues, and DirectX11 will make it look nice, but it may well be a retread of FSX, rather than a major upgrade. I used to buy new computers with every release of Flight Simulator... but probably not with this incarnation. It would be nice if there was a path for migrating FSX planes and scenery, but I'm not convinced that will happen.

Shouldn't be much of a problem though, provided they're shipping a usable SDK.

DX11 was released for Windows 7, so I'd be REALLY surprised if the new FS doesn't work in it.

"Flight technology" implies that they're using an upgraded version of the engine although I do find the lack of autogen density in the preview shot of Flight School fairly odd.

And take a look at the tree shadows.......

Frankly DTG's screenshot looks like monkey poop in comparison with FSX:SE. There's absolutely no detail visible, even on the airport facilities.
If we're talking about a yellow a/c trying to land on rwy 08 at LOWI then that doesn't say much about "flight School." He's way way too high. The reason why the autogen is spartan is probably because it's DLC!. After all it is Dovetail.

and the water (river here) still looks ugly. For marine lover like myself, it is the most annoying visual aspect. All rivers, lakes looks like part of the sea and the sea is ugly itself.

OK I know it's a flight sim, not marine sim, but I hope to see some day transparent and moving water with bottom textures in the flight sim ...

anyway, interesting things to come in 2016 ...
