• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

Filter Out non Ground Polygon

Hi Arno,
I'm making 3dGrass and I wonder this option in Ground Polygon Wizard is working or not.
The first picture I put the grass as layers of ground poly in stake and export via fs2002 and modified the code as we used to go before we have MCX and ground polygon wizzard. It came out nicely.

The second picture I export it as FS2004 and put the mdl through ground polygon wizard and check out the box Filter Out non Ground Polygon BEFORE loading up the mdl.

As you see in the picture, it leaves only the last polygon to the ground. The rest of them has gone.
 
That box will remove all polygons that are not at 0 elevation. Since all of your other polygons are *not* on the ground (i.e. at 0 elevation), it will remove them. You must uncheck that box.

Hi,

You can't use the ground polygon wizard for this. The ground polygon wizard will project your polygons onto the ground. I forgot if I added an option to prevent that as well.

Besides that making 3d objects with only the layer call command can give you weird display of them. Not sure if that will happen with low grass already, but it might be better to use normal mdl objects.

But if that option works, it would be nice. Sometime we still need so vertical polygon like the edge of the grass.

But vertical polygons and the ground polygon code will give drawing issues. So it is in general not advised.
 
In general this is true, but this 3D grass technique has supposedly worked around them. There is a long forum thread about this here at FSD. Look at his results in the first image. :)
 
Yes, I agree with tgibson.
Something in vertical less than 10-15 cm is not going to have issue with drawing order. Since no any planes or visual view to let you look down to that level. From the view point of people who sit on the airplane at any size cannot see at 10-15 cm above the ground. So there will be no drawing order issue for 3d grass.

Tic, did you try to uncheck the option to project polygons onto the ground? That should keep them their height. Although I am not sure if the slicing algorithm will cope well with polygons that are not on the ground.

I'll check it later, I am not behind my FS pc currently.

Yes, I did uncheck the option before loading the ground poly to MCX.
Personally, I think this option is not working.
 
Ok, I put it on the bug list to check. I have been a bit busy recently, hopefully i can check the different reported issues this weekend.
 
Arno if you can get it to work then we can build the grass with over runways

as one mdl.

Your idea is very good. We can do simple polygon and have other things over it. So we can have 3d grass everywhere with less polgons and set it as the lowest layer. Then everything else will be over it. We can have a 3d grass with very limited polygons.

Let me see if I understand this last suggestion. You want to have the grass as the lowest layer covering the entire airfield. And then give taxiways and runways a higher layer so they show above?

But would that not give trouble if some of your grass polygons are slightly above the ground? I do expect those layers would still show above your runway.
 
I thought it should be cover by the other higher layer even the polygon is higher but not much. Let me try my idea and I will let you know later.
 
Arno i think for it to work right the grass must have a higher layer than the rest,dont know what Tic thinks.

If i can make may runway with grass a long side it as one model,that will save a lot of time.

Hi Tic,

I just tested it, but when I uncheck both the filter and project checkboxes it is working here. The different polygons at different heights are then preserved for me.
 
Oh do you mean both boxes on the top of ground polygon wizard?

I uncheck both boxes and it is still not working.
Would you like the mdl file and texture to test?
Here is the picture to prove. The background is view in FSX and the front is the wizard setting that I used.

Hi Tic,

Having your object would help in that case. I tried with an object here and unchecking both boxes was enough to keep the altitude of the polygons.
