• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Freeway traffic

I know that ADE does not support freeway traffic, but I understand there is a way to add freeway traffic to an airport created with ADE. It was either with SbuilderX or Sketchup, not sure which. How would I go about doing such a thing without a lot of complicated rig-a-ma-roll stuff. I know it has something to do with using vectors and stuff, but how exactly would I go about doing that? Is it really complicated? Or is there a semi-easy way to do it. I tried using an AI traffic creator, but none of the free ones I tried actually support any kind of "freeway" type traffic. I bassically want some random traffic to show on the roads I added to the airport. I did it years ago, but I have no idea how I did it. I don't know if it was with an older (much older) version of ADE that supported freeway traffic, or if it was with some 3rd party software that added freeway traffic. It was so many years ago when FSX had just come out and I just found out about all the neat little things you could do with ADE. I'm suspecting I used an older version of ADE that was before the freeway vector option was removed. If so, what version would that have been?

Hi Tom:

Having looked at your *.AD4 file in ADEv1.79x, many CVX vector objects are superimposed on various layers and edges are not all in precise alignment.

I would recommend zooming in / inspecting closely all your CVX vector Road objects to ensure edges are in precise alignment.

Once that is done, I would compile the ADE project, then immediately copy the ESRI *.SHP files from the \Shapes folder at:

[Airport Design Editor 179 install path]\FSX\shapes

...then paste those CVX vector ESRI *.SHP files into a safe 'work' folder.

Do not compile again until you have retrieved the *.SHP files; ADE deletes them before it does another compile.

I would then import those files into SBuilderX via the "Append" feature, and simply add Freeway Traffic vectors on top of Roads.

Note that Freeway Traffic vectors "clip" (traffic vanishes, and/or may re-appear nearby) at QMID-15 quad borders.

The easiest way to work with Freeway Traffic vectors is with a QMID-15 grid displayed in the SBuilderX workspace.

The easiest way to see normal Road vector quad "clip" borders is with a QMID-11 grid displayed in the SBuilderX workspace.

There really is no comparison between the CVX vector tool feature set in SBuilderX, and any other legacy FS utility, AFAIK.

You may recall in threads I linked in your prior threads inquiring about possible use of ADE for Freeway Traffic, AFAIK the info about Jim Vile having created Freeway Traffic via ADE involved a not-publicly-distributed 'closed' Alpha build, that I doubt Jon would ever want to release (if he even has it anymore).

Frankly, I doubt you would want to use FSX-KML to do this task, IMHO, as more work is involved than in SBuilderX

If you need help getting installed / configured / oriented with SBuilderX version 3.15 64-bit, let us know. :)

I've always had some problems with getting road vectors aligned precisely, it even causes with FSXPilot when I try to make a auto flightplan to have my vehicles travel certain routes without my intervention. The cars always seem to go off the road in various places and even sometimes just start going in circles because it ccan't find the vectors to get back on track. I'm going to take a look at the roads in more detail, exactly what am I looking for, I'm still new at this vector editing thingy.

Are you talking about where the roads meet there are some gaps? I've always had that problem, I never thought too much about them as they seem to work ok except like I said with FSPilot.

If the CVX vector roads are precisely aligned with each other, and they are "clipped" at a QMID-11 quad border, you can then super-impose the Freeway Traffic vectors on top of the Roads; just be aware those will "clip" at QMID-15 on Road objects, not QMID-11.

Note that the extensive fine work done by SBuilderX author Luis Vieira De Sa' with his editor for CVX vectors and *.SHP files is one of the best available in the software field, and is specifically optimized for FSX / P3D.

If you are interested in that level of detail, you can even configure traffic to travel on the correct side of the Road etc..

The online help file in SBuilderX should provide answers to most questions on Freeway Traffic.

There are a few tricks I found using SBuilderX's Append feature to import content in way that is easier to use in the workspace.

If you decide to try SBuilderX for this (and I do note your ongoing hesitancy), we can help you with learning this task. :)

I definately want to give it a try. Please any help will be greatly appreciated. I hope I have the correct version of SBuilerX on here. I've looked (breifly) at it and didn't se much, of course I've never really worked with it either. I will need some help in using it. I'm now just learning to use Sketchup. I would like to have the traffic run on the correct sides of the roads. I'm not using crash detection right now, but for my final project, I want to be able to run it with crash detection to make things a bit harder for my RPG players. I'm going to be using a remote access system so that the players can interact with the SIM and do some of the driving and /or flying themselves without me having to do it all. I'll be busy DMing the RPG to deal with having to do all the driving and everything. This is an ongoing project, the game is currently underway, but I'm doing all the work, the players just tell me what they want to do and I do it while streaming the SIM. I eventually want to eliminate that.

Ok, something is wrong, I tried to append the files and I get a protected memory error and nothing loads up. What are the steps I need to do to get this to work? Do I need to somehow load the actual airport into SBX or what?

I would need to see a screenshot of the error to see what is happening; please attach one. ;)

PS: I need to 'disconnect' the SW part of the Island Road flatten from the NE part with the Taxiway Path, and the SW shoreline.

This will be required to make the 100 Ft. 'hill', and the sloped road going up from the Island Road flatten to the airstrip flatten

This is to be done in a 'copy' of your airport *.AD4 file; any objections ? :scratchch

I'll need to attend to some other commitments for a few minutes, and will return shortly to see what the screenshot says.

I can't get a screen shot but here is what the error message says

"Attempted to read or Write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.

This was an unexpected error that can lead to unpredictable results. If you press NO SBuilderX will shut down. If you press YES you can continue to work at your own risk. Do you want to continue? Yes / No"

If I press YES nothing happens.

OIK, I managed to load up the .shp files, but how do I add vectors to roads? I don't see any "vector" selection in SBuilderX menu. Am I using the wrong version or something? I think the problem was SBX don't like loading off of flash drives or SSD drives using an USB port. I put the files on a local drive and they loaded. SBX don't seem to like external drives only local drives seem to work. I still can't find any selection that allows me to add vectors.

That error is rarely seen; I'm not certain what would cause that except a failing RAM module, or one needing to be 're-seated'.

Google finds this:

What are the ESRI files, are those the .shp files?
Yes

I still can't find any selection that allows me to add vectors.

I'll post some info shortly to answer those questions.

In the mean time, you may wish to review these (2) threads on the Append process I use with SBuilderX and CVX vector import:

https://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/sbuilderx-ft-or-m.437055/

https://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/t...-vector-objects-in-sbuilderx-for-katl.444877/

I think the problem was SBX don't like loading off of flash drives or SSD drives using an USB port. I put the files on a local drive and they loaded. SBX don't seem to like external drives only local drives seem to work.

I have not seen that before; I would suspect a Windows-11 security prompt being relayed via SBuilderX' error reporting text.

Perhaps Windows-11 may be overly cautious about "Trusted Zone" disk sources versus removable media in task sessions ?

I need to revise what I siad earlier, I cannot copy and paste the files to any other folder or I get the memory error, I can only append the files from the ADE folder. Copying them to anywhere else won't let me load them.

I didn't understand any of that I read. It's all like reading Russian or something.

As far as loading the files, I guess I'll have to just stick with loading them from the ADE directory. As long as I don't do any compiling until I'm done I should be ok. I have noticed that not all of the roads are showing up. May be still some road vectors are still not aligned or something. I'll have to look at that later, one step at a time. I want a proof of concept first, I just want to put freeway traffic or road traffic on the two main roads, the one up to the North, and the one over on the East going North/South. Those are the two main roads. Once I figure those out, and get a good idea of how to do them, I can move on to some of the other roads. Let's just stick to those two main ones for now. BTW:My SBX version is 3.13, is that the right one or is there a newer version that I need?

Hi again:

DO NOT USE SBuilderX version 3.13

You need SBuilderX version 3.15 for 64-Bit CPU and Windows compatibility.

Install this complete folder chain provided by Dick:

I have 3.15 now, I noticed that when I load the .shp files,I don't see any of my roads, all I see are the polys that are under the roads. Those polys are there to remove the vegetation from the roads they are exclusion polys , without them I get trees and other vegetation on my roads. None of my roads are showing up in SBX. Without knowing where the roads are I couldn't very well add traffic vectors to them. Is there something wrong with ADE not compiling the roads into the SHP files? Could it be I still have missaligned vectors on my roads? I'm lost.
