• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2020 seems to be a game, but not simulator

I would hope they keep Windows 7 in the loop. Its a dang nice OS and very stable with no bugs.
Support for Windows 7 ends 6 months from now. The new sim is only in development. Which do you think will come first, FS2020 release or execution day for Win7?

I don’t think you’re going to get your wish.

Win7 will continue to run, and run well even after 'support' expires. Who relies exclusively on Window's own protection anyway?

A huge issue with Windows 7 is the outdated xAudio interface that comes with the OS. For some bewildering reason MS didn't see it worthwhile to upgrade Windows 7 to the latest xAudio 2.9. So any game engine that relies on the current sound engine won't run on W7.

Luckily for me, my sim machine is Win10. My main dev machine is Win7 and I have to plans to change that anytime soon.

Of course, I just mean MS won’t feel any obligation to make the new sim Win7-compatible with the long-advertised expiry of support due in January. I have Win7 on the kids’ machine still, the local vet still runs Vista o_O and a friend still has MS-DOS 6.22 on a partition. :rotfl: They’ll all still run, but most are unlikely to run FS2020.

I must get more coffee tomorrow :coffee:

Take a guess how many businesses currently still run Credit Card Merchant Account transactions on 'point of service' ancient modular computer / card mag-stripe scanners using Windows XP Embedded. :stirthepo

Far more than compelled L-M to retro-port P3D to DX-10 as user budgets did not allow DX-11 hardware / OS updates ! :yikes:

What is the reason you all (well, maybe some of you?) suspect it will not run anymore on W7???
It should, AFAIK, have nothing to do with the Windows version you are using unless there is something involved that has nothing at all to do with the Windows version but with the 'cloud' or some other (yet to discover) things that would make it impossible when not available in W7.
Now, what could that be????????????? Definitely not 64bit!

I do now on all my Windows instalations. Antivir got on my nerves and Windows Defender's performance has constantly improved over the years.

Shame that they axed Windows Phone though. I don't want to throw my phone away after only three years because of some important apps that will refuse to run after the end of official support.

XP Embedded ran on our old client PCs at work (for work on virtual desktops) and I refused to upgrade it until the old servers were shut down this spring. The new PCs run on a UNIX-based embedded system and the IT department, after almost a year, still hasn't figured out how to add encryption software for removable drives to them, which makes my work more tedious because I have to do all file transfers from a Windows laptop. But this is a companywide exception because of pressing needs iin my department as the desired practice is having IT do all file transfer work, which they do once a day or so. As I am working around 500 km away from HQ, I'd have to mail a USB pen drive and instructions for every transfer of documents, photos and other data. It's bloody ridiculous.

C'mon, you need to pull these out on the plane in coach or in your hotel room instead of that silly controller. :stirthepo :censored::duck:

I need to get around by car a lot and could just set up a sim station in the backseat area, but as I've experienced on wednesday, my car's battery can't even handle eight hours of running parking lights on a summer day (because the warning buzzer is broken and I forgot to check the switch).

It is simply because Win7 cannot run DX11 much less DX12. Not being able to run your GPU is a pretty big stumbling block... :rotfl:

I’m not sure that’s right about Win7 and DX11. DirectX 12 might be a problem, but I’d have to check.

Win7, not really supported, just kinda, sorta, maybe...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX#DirectX_11

DirectX 11.1 was also partially backported to Windows 7, via the Windows 7 platform update.[

DirectX 12.x on Win7, not much of a chance, although some limited support for a yet unreleased game is supposedly being developed.
See: https://www.pcgamer.com/microsoft-finally-ports-directx-12-to-windows-7-but-only-for-certain-games/

From what I understand, Microsoft slowly phased out directX and moved on to a solution that is integrated into the OS. That's why nowadays you don't have to "please install directx runtime library" any more.
Windows 7 came at a time of transition from the old directX architecture to the integrated solution and is as a result - like Bill puts it - kinda-sorta-maybe compatible. At the moment W7 is still maintained by MS, but when they pull the plug, the whole old directX architecture will become obsolete.

Hm, looks like there will be an update for the old FSX soon :scratchch Does anyone know something about it or is it more of a mistake on the website:

fsx_update.jpg

I believe the next announcement update will contain a hint of backward compatibility to FSX scenery and aircraft. I suspect that aircraft with XML gauges will work, similar to P3D.

That could actually be possible, an interesting aspect. But in theory MS could have brought the old code of the FSX on the technical standard of today. The source code underlying the FSX is still owned by MS. Or am I wrong about it?

The only thing I want - and preferably in P3D - is to get of the bloody awful 8-bit/256 colours restriction. It is giving me no end of stick with the latest generation of Nvidia GTX2000-series GPUs running 4K monitors. Really, really bad reproduction of any form of gradient.
