• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Gmax, Creating Smoke & Fire on aircraft Engine

I posted earlier, maybe Im not clear in what I am trying to make. Someone out here, has to have done this before.

I have my C172, in 3ds max, I have applied animation tags to propeller and also flaps and ailerons. Ive added the attach point tool. Then I export this to .mdl using xtomdl. All works perfect!

My next challenge, is to add smoke and fire to my front cowl, during an engine failure. In Prepar3d, this effect is visible from under the aircraft, I want to move this effect, to the front of the aircraft, so I can see the flames from Virtual Cockpit.

I believe I am on the right path, as I think I need to add an attachpoint tool to an object....fx_engFire and fx_engsmoke.....in 3ds Max.

I have tried this, so far no results, and I get an error when I attempt to compile my .x using xtomdl.

I am so grateful for anyone who has experience doing this, who can direct me to the right tutorial or if they have the solution. If I can make this discovery first, I will certainly post my findings up here.

Thank you so much!

Hi,

I do not have the answer because I already fear flying when I am not the pilot.
Maybe you should read this book of Erica Jong "Fear of Flying" and spend some more time on that?:);).
All jesting aside, you would normally put the effects in the aircraft.cfg but I am not sure how to do this in case you have a seperate model (I presume you have) that is damaged.
I guess it is a condition you have to put in (related to some failure settings in FSX) before the effect shows up?
If you do not have a seperate model then I wonder if it could be a matter of adapting the effect in such a way (adding spot=1) so that it does show up in outside view.
I reply without knowing the answer because it is an interesting subject I have not read about in the FSDeveloper forums and because I would like to know how to do that as well:).
Forgive the interruption.

Solution

FOUND IT.....SO SIMPLE!!

No need to go into3ds max at all. In the aircraft.cfg I just had to adjust the xy coordinates of the engine, play with the bold text below,

[GeneralEngineData]
engine_type = 0
Engine.0 = 10, 0,5
ThrustAnglesPitchHeading.0 = 0,0
fuel_flow_scalar= 0.88
min_throttle_limit = 0.0
