• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

GMax exporting trouble

I have been looking for a solution for the "GMax problem" and I have concluded with that I can use Sketchup instead. But if there were any otther formats to export from GMax, that we could open in Model Converter X, that would be great. But I am for now trying to learn grond polygons in Sketchup.:)

What you've been told is the correct procedure. If it is not working, then something has gone seriously wrong in your installation process.

Ground polygons in Sketchup? I am not too familiar with Sketchup. How might you make them that way? I guess you would have to have an image overlay of the terrain, which Sketchup provides if I can recall correctly.

In my case right now I need to make groundpolygons. The only thing I will use GMax to is to create groun polygon. All otther 3d moddeling projects will be done in Sketchup. It is easy to use, and you can easlily export as a COLLADA file that Model ConverterX can read. In Sketchup you apply textures, and when you export from Sketchup the texures is also beeing exported. In that way you can make both ground polygons and otther 3d objects.

Thanks for that tutorial.

However, I don't know if I should use Sketchup. I tried earlier and the quality of the 3D objects that it produces aren't as high as in Gmax. It is so frustrating that my Gmax does not work.

First of all you need to know if the SDK is correctly installed, you should see the tools menú (object placement tool, Fx tool, traffic tool) inside fsx game, once you are sure of this. you will focus in Gmax. Almost all have been told in the above posting. the Dot issue, the path to the SDK plugin etc.
The modeldef.xml file should be in the Bin folder. I see it was wrong in one of your post. and please recheck the path. sometimes is prone to mistakes. when setting the path you should tick on the xtomdl.exe file to set the path. I usually had problems with that.
Sketchup is cool for modelling and you have almost the same functions along with MCX where you can manipulate the fsx materials. but not have animations creation tools.

There are a few paragraphs in the SDK under Using Modelling Tools which deal with installing the tools for Gmax. It's easy, but make sure you've followed all the instructions, including NET framework 2.0 if you're running XP. Vista and later should have that already.

I am afraid that I am doing something wrong. Is my paths set right? (See picture)

Keep in mind that his path setup may be different from yours. If you use his setup, you may have to move your SDK folders to the locations he lists. There must be valid SDK folders in those locations.

I've attached pictures of my setup paths for you. As Tom Gibson states depending on your SDK install you may not have the same paths.

Thank you. Now I have entered a location to my modeldef.xml.(See picture)
I still get all the error messages, including the "Failed to load animation definition file" error...

How do you startup GMAX? Do you have a desktop shortcut that starts it from the C:/gmax/gamepacks/fsx_gamepack (or wherever you installed it)? This was my problem. Instead of starting Gmax from the gmax gamepacks folder, I went into the SDK in my FSX main folder. Then I went to Environment SDK, Modeling SDK, FSX Gmax Gamepack, and opened the shortcut from there.

Here is the directory I opened it from. Since you are using the Boxed Edition (I presume) It would be under Microsoft Games/FSX.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\FSX\SDK\Environment Kit\Modeling SDK\FSX_GmaxGamePack

!!Note: I am using FSX:SE, but I have the Deluxe Edition installed side by side so I have access to the SDK. (That's a story for another time though).

It's really late here and I am really tired so if something doesn't make sense to you then let me know and I will clarify.

yes, I open from C:/gmax/gamepacks/fsx_gamepack. Does still not work. I think I will just give this up...

No. You should open from your SDK! This is the problem I had. I open it from inside my SDK folder in FSX NOT the gmax game packs folder.
