• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Help Modifying Runway Materials

I've watched the basic tutorials on creating custom textures, lines, etc. and that all seems easy enough. I would like to create a custom version of the default runway asphalt included in the sim. Since I discovered I can't colorize it I figured I'd copy the DDS file and modify it. But when I open the DDS file in photoshop it's all blue.

Is there a way I can work with this DDS file?

You can colorize a runway. You do not want to modify any of the default textures.

I found a good match for a runway I'm working on but it's the default runway asphalt with specific properties applied. The only problem is that it's way too new/dark looking (which is a general complaint of MSFS runways).

I have an earlier version published here, https://flightsim.to/file/45033/klna-palm-beach-county-park-airport-lantana-airport. I've just never been happy with the accuracy (it's also my first) airport. I decided to simplify the textures and improve the color accuracy.

Appreciate the help!

I think that will be my fallback until I can figured out more advanced techniques.

I was trying to match the real world look using the runway materials. Doing the Border type with a U of 0.45 was about spot on. But then it makes the runway way darker than in real life and contrasting too much with the taxiways.

I think the sim/SDK seems more focused on runways with heavy jet traffic and lacks on smaller GA.

I appreciate the help!
