• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hello to All,...

As the Title suggests,... a new version of SketchUp is available!

http://www.sketchup.com/products/sketchup-pro/new-in-2013

So far what I have found out in the use of, in conjunction with MCX (ModelConverterX).... everything works as it should,.. BUT, one thing I will point out, is that SketchUp 2013 may load older versions of Models that you have created,... you will not be able to use saved versions from New back to Older versions any longer. So please make a backup of your older models created in the older format.

I figure though there are differences in the file structure between the Old and the New. I haven't used the KMZ save format etc, so there could be differences in the how or where it is located in the file structure.

The New version will install in a new directory from your old,... which means you will still have the Older version installed on your computer (Nice!),... Besides the steep cost for the PRO version ($590.00 USD), the new version is a nice update. Just to name one,... installing extensions is easier, like installing onto your smartphone.

Sorry if this sounds like a commercial,.. not meaning to be! I'm not getting paid by Trimble for writing this at all! :)

Hi Doug,

I am rather hesitant in downloading this new version.
I lost some plugins already when I updated from v7 to v8 and I am afraid we are going to be curtailed even further in GU Make.
Are you sure downloading the new one will not affect any of the possibilities and plugins you had before?

Hi Roby:

I agree it would be prudent to wait a little while until the workarounds are posted in online forums for installing popular ex: SU8 Sketchup plug-ins that have not 'yet' been updated for installation via the Trimble Sketchup 2013 (aka "SU2013") Extension Warehouse portal. ;)

However, an initial scan of Sketchup Google Group Forum posts suggests that most, if not all, pre-SU2013 plugins ...are likely to work in SU2013 as they did in ex: SU8, even though some copied over from the SU8 plug-in folder chain may initially appear in different menu locations until tweaked. :scratchch

The critical caveat is to NOT over-write any SU2013 default Ruby scripts (or other new "system" files) in its own new plug-ins folder ...with those from the ex: plugins SU8 folder. :alert:

Since most users may not know which older ex: SU8 files may actually be default "system" files for Sketchup which have the same names as used by SU2013, it has been recommended that immediately after installing SU2013:

1.) Make a backup COPY of the entire SU2013 "Plugins" folder as a *.ZIP or *.RAR file in the root folder of SU2013 with the "relative / stored folders" option ...so that it retains the folder chain structure properly.

NOTE: Leave the resulting ZIP or RAR archived file intact within that SU2013 root folder location.

2.) Copy Plugins folder as a whole with all its sub-folders from ex: SU8 to the root folder of SU2013 with permission to over-write all files in target SU2013 Plugin folder.

3.) Un-ZIP / un-RAR the backup COPY of the entire SU2013 "Plugins" folder from Step 1 with the "stored folders" option so that it re-creates the folder chain properly.

NOTE: During de-archiving of the ZIP or RAR file, allow permission to over-write all files in target SU2013 Plugin folder; this will restore the required new SU2013 default files ...leaving older non-default / non-system 3rd party ex: SU8 files intact.

BTW: Apparently one can import / export *.SKP project files between SU2013 and ex: "SU8" formats with no significant difference in feature set or functionality by selecting the appropriate input / output file versions of a SU file during import / export.

Thanks for the heads up on this (...I haven't installed SU2013 yet either) ! :)

My One Click Hangar plugin for SketchUp should be working ok in SketchUp 2013, however I have only done minimal testing so far.

Hello Roby,...

I understand the way you feel about waiting,... I was hesitate myself about updating before backing up, but once I started and realized it was installing into it own directory,.. I knew I was OK! Also,.. the new update, warns about loading previous versions models, save it under a name will will preserve the original.

Actually about the plugins etc,... I wasn't using much of them soooo,... for me it wasn't much of a concern for me,... though a few through the extension warehouse,.. there were some good ones sooo,.. I have installed them. :D!!

As always,... user beware on all updates, when in doubt,.. backup!

Hi Doug,

Well, you are compromised already, but I will wait:).
Although you can install it in a different folder, it is an install.exe and you never know what they installed exactly (dll's) and where and what it does to your existing version.
I was born an unbelieving Thomas and distrustful of giving my particulars to everybody (only the ones I 'think' I can trust) and I have kept those characteristics always (and very often to my benefit). That is why I am still reluctant to install the new version (as well as being stubborn enough not to give in to Paypal when they want my address and telephone number and E-mail to make a donation, although I would very much like to make it:().
