• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

One Shot Sound & Play List

Thorsten,

Unless I'm mistaken, you can't attach an effect to just any piece of scenery (which is I think your question).

For example ... I don't think it's possible to add the EmergencyLights.fx to any old vehicle scenery (again, maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I don't think it works.)

The scenery must contain a specific attach point designed in from the start before you can attach an effect to that scenery in a meaningful way. One of the SDKs had a list of all scenery with attach points and the attach point names of those points.

In Palm 90, I tried attaching a fire effect to scenery which had no attach points ... using the attachpt_GenericEffect method. Didn't work very well. In Earthquake!, I abandoned that method.

Is it really that hard to give a unique name to effects file?
I mean, come on guys, this is not an issue unless you name your effects something like "fx_fire.fx". Use unique prefixes (you may use your name if you don't come up with anything clever) and everything's fine.

I agree that there are workarounds to prevent accidental overwrites.

An additional benefit of having fully-contained mission folders is that the user could theoretically move these folders out if they need to reinstall FSX and then move them back and have whole missions back, without having to re-run installation routines for each mission they downloaded.

Again, random thoughts here ... mostly, because I hadn't thought about naming my added effect something like this: "palm90_deicing.fx"

That's a good idea!

Thanks Paul, I got it to work!

One question, do you use a "/" or "\" in the path name? I see you use the "\", both seem to work.

Thanks,

Gunner

Paul,

After I asked the question, I notice the \ looks to be the proper slash between folder names. I didn't know the Mission Creation tool was so forgiving :)

Thanks,
Gunner

Hi Folks

Gunner & Thorsten -
My apologies...
I've only just realised
you'd both previously posted paths refering to the 'Sound' folder. :o

Gunner -
I'd certainly expected "\" to have worked, as AFAIK that is the default seperator.
I'd just assumed that "/" might have been a typo in your post. :)

No harm done, Paul. It's always good to know there are several people out there knowing the stuff. :)

Sorry guys, I've been working overtime on FSX Adrenaline and haven't been keeping up on the forums. Recently finished hooking up a racing tutorial at Reno Stead, a mission at Edwards, and another somewhere in the Atlantic...

As for fixing anything for the playlists in SP1, it's not going to happen. We are going as fast as we can to get it out the door and this wouldn't meet the bar, especially when there is a reasonable workaround with naming conventions.

Great stuff in this forum and I hope mission builders adopt your proposed standards.

Thanks for the update, Paul. I'm really looking foreward to Adrenaline. :)
Of course I do expect some nice missions-addons from other developers too - let's wait what's in the queue at the moment. :D

Here is a tip. I found a way to stop a PlayList. If you start a second PlayList, the first PlayList stops and the second plays.

To stop a PlayList create a special PlayListAction with one PlayList item, and use the sound file silence.wav. The file silence.wav is in the FSX Sound folder, and it is a short blank sound file. When you want the music to stop, start this special PlayList, and the music will stop.

That is a good idea. Actually I thought of it just yesterday as I was wondering how the user yould say "hey, enough of this :blackcat:  :p music!". :D
