• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Photo01.bgl Crashes sim

Has anyone else noticed this happening with P3D_V2.4? wanted to redo the photoreal ground texture I had for my local airport. The original was produced through SBX about a year ago when P3D_Ver2.1 or 2.2 was probably still what I was running. So I produced a new photoreal texture with SBX_Ver3.14 (64bit). As soon as I attempt to load the sim to that airport it crashes just prior to it completely loading. None of my other sceneries (there are a ton of them) with photoreal textures produced last year and earlier this year have any problems loading.

Additional info: I tried loading an adjacent airport. . .one that's within 5nm of the offending airport. It also locked up and crashed. Then I tried loading an airport that I know to be about 15nm north of the airport. . .it loaded and I began flying towards the airport. . .when I was within about 8nm the sim crashed again. NOTE: the only file in the scenery folder is the photo01.bgl file. I pulled the scenery folder, removed it from the scenery library and I can now load to that airport in default.

The production of the new ground texture was done like every other one I've ever done. No changes to the ini file. . .I don't do anything other than capture the area I want and compile it to a bgl. The area only encompasses the airport proper so we aren't talking about a huge swath of land. File sizes are usually less than 200meg to begin with prior to compiling and less once the compile is complete and I add the blur and nightmaps. It appears that P3D_V2.4 and SBX_V3.14 are not compatible for some reason.

Hi Ed:

A few initial questions come to mind:

* Can your (FSX format ?) custom photo-real land class aerial imagery BGL be viewed in [FSX SDK install path]\SDK\Environment Kit\Terrain SDK\TmfViewer.exe and the equivalent from the Prepar3D SDK ...without crashing or generating any error messages ?

* Are you using any autogen annotations with this FSX format custom photo-real land class aerial imagery BGL ?

...If so:

* Have you tested in FSX and P3D with any such custom autogen disabled by temporarily re-naming the local paired \Texture folder containing the *an.AGN files ?

* Did you create any such annotations using FSX SDK Annotator or P3D SDK Annotator ?

AFAIK, the same file format is output for CVX-type custom photo-real land class aerial imagery BGLs from P3D SDK Resample as is output by FSX SDK Resample.

However, IIUC, the path used in SBuilderX 3.14 64-bit is still pointed at the FSX SDK Resample, and the latter would likely be the default compiler used for generating CVX-type custom photo-real land class aerial imagery BGLs via the SBuilderX GUI "compile" option.

You may wish to ensure use of the P3D SDK Resample instead of the FSX SDK Resample, by substituting that P3D SDK compiler for the FSX SDK compiler used by default in SBuilderX 3.14 64-bit.

This might be done by manually launching in a Windows command prompt text mode (aka "CMD") task session, a local copy of P3D SDK Resample placed into ex: the folder containing the Photo01.INF file for the CVX-type custom photo-real land class aerial imagery *.BGL file(s) in question.

Hope this helps with sorting things out. :)

Gary, here in Texas they have a saying (one of many favorite sayings). . .if it had been a snake it'd bit ya!! What I failed to note was that I had not kept up with the most recent SDK via Lockheed Martin's website. Downloaded that, replaced the necessary dll files in SBX and all is well.

Also Gary, I no longer have any of the previous Sims. . .I'm now exclusively P3D_V2.4 and really enjoying it. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Hi Ed:

Which "necessary DLLs" did you replace in SBuilderX 3.14 64-bit ? :scratchch

Thanks for that clarification, Ed.

IIUC, you "substituted" the (updated version 2.x) P3D compilers for the FSX compilers as ex: local copies placed into certain 'work' folders used by SBuilderX 64-bit ? :scratchch

Happy scenery making ! :)

Correct, I had an earlier version of the P3D SDK which apparently changed at some point and I failed to notice the update.

I also use P3D only now, with the latest SDK. I have tried using both the FSX and P3D resample.exe, without any problem. You may wonder how I can use the FSX resample.exe still. I render all my photos manually, without using SBuilder. I have a separate "Render" folder, with subfolders for each airport, and a copy of resample.exe in each airport folder. This is because I use local photo material, where the quality is way above google maps.
