• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Some times you just "doodle" around a bit

I sort of do the same thing, except my "doodling" is making low-poly models (ostensibly for AI). Since I really don't have the time I used to have to build full-resolution models, I can get the urge to build airplanes out that way. I see it as a challenge: at a moderate distance, how much detail can we get out of fewer than 10,000 polygons, while maintaining dimensional accuracy and a sense of scale? They're also useful in terms of subjects that I may want to pursue further later. I can build a simple model that could later be used as a template for a not-so-simple model (template as in a guide to build a new model - I avoid subdivision modelling like the plague). This is great, because even a simple model takes me more time than a complex one did way back when I used to build models with any real frequency.

Here's a DA20 that I'm using to test out some ideas I had for future models (it's made from the incomplete full-resolution model and was intended to rig up the landing gear and contact points). For an "AI" model, it's rather high-polygon (~8000), but AI use is really a secondary purpose. Note the brand-new low-poly figures I built to replace the crappy ones I jacked from the default Cherokee:

This little L-083 is for another idea I want to test. It's sitting around 2300 polys at the moment.

There is a lot of visual trickery in this model. The burner petals are animated (I actually have an F-104G FCOM, so I animated them according to the schedule - it's a non-linear movement), but it only cost 96 triangles. The textures will have to carry the weight of suspension of disbelief. Because I'll be fading the inside of the burner duct to black, I could afford to reduce the number of sides inside of it from 20-ish on the outer rim to 8 at the turbine face. The nose probe uses a similar process to reduce the number of sides to 4 at its smallest point.

I see every AI model I attack as a puzzle that will ultimately help me build full-resolution models that are both more detailed and more efficient.
 
Resuming some ideas about a rotor head... not blueprints or detailed photos. Consider this as a "freestyle" modeling.

This "doodle" toke me more than a day (tweaking former parts and creating some new). I just cannot get the pitch horn right...

@antaris , that looks really cool! I can see where the inspiration came from and it'd convince me, but the photo kinda disclaims it...

As someone who dreamt of being an architect before i dreamt of becoming a pilot (after which i somehow ended up as an economy student haha) those are absolutely brilliant!
Both of them are quite majestic! Loving it! :D

There's some shading artifact at the inlet sideplate though.. Probably welded vertices where not needed? I wouldn't know how to solve these complex geometries though.

Turned out to be a vert that went astray... Well I never claimed I was a good modeler :rotfl:
I hope I can find the time to actually import it to the sim today...
