Aerofly 2 Released; Beta; Steam Games

SEPTEMBER 16 - IPACS AEROFLY

Aerofly FS 2 Update Version 2.0.1EA3.36

Dear Aerofly users,

Here is another update for Aerofly FS 2. With this update we mainly addressed some graphic issue and improve the Saitek devices support. As a reference we have also included changes from previous updates.

For HTC Vive users: To get the best experience with your HTC Vive we recommend to turn on 'Allow reprojection' as well as 'Perf Heuristic Active' in the SteamVR performance settings window. If enabled, please disable 'Enable Always-On Reprojection' in the developer window of SteamVR. We also strongly recommend to reduce cumulus clouds to a minimum for better performance.

Here is the list of changes in this update

2016-09-16

  • Fixed rendering issues with landmarks, clouds and shadows since last update
  • Fixed creating screenshots while in VR
  • Fixed transponder code can be set with Saitek Radio Panel and buttons/keys
  • Changed head tracking with HTC Vive ( To get the best experience with your HTC Vive we recommend to turn on 'Allow reprojection' as well as 'Perf Heuristic Active' in the SteamVR performance settings window! )
  • Added default assignments for Saitek Radio Panel for COM and transponder
  • Added F18 autopilot controllable via Upper Front Control (WIP)
  • Changed A320 small improvements/fixes to displays
  • Fixed A320 flap / slat sequence
  • Changed ASG29 flight computer improvements

2016-09-09

  • Improved depth buffer rendering for less flickering of distant objects

Tried a couple of times to fly yesterday (Sunday) and kept having episodes with pulsing, jittering. So, I started experimenting with settings.

If I reduced texture detail from Ultra to Med, frame rates and smoothness went fluid. (All settings are on Ultra). Looking at downtown Los Angeles and Santa Monica in low rez were horrible. I guess I need a new graphics card. My GTX660 with 2 Gigs of DDR is just showing its age I guess. sigh.... I hate slow frame rates and jitters, and I hate low resolution.

I remember it running smoother. I guess all the updates and things are paying their toll. I hope it never becomes a frame rate monster like FSX is.

I seem to recall one of the updates was meant to give you higher FPS not lower. Maybe the 'pulsing and jittering' episodes are to do with your PC.
Are you running something silly like Norton AV?
Or maybe like you said, its your graphics card.

I hope you are soon running smooth again

No issues here at all. My FPS on ultra (Non-VR) regularly average between 300 to 400+

I dont know whats going on... :( Probably my rig. This poor Alienware is getting old. It could be my rig. Seems like its a new issue. Mind you, I havent had a nice, long, relaxing flight in a while.

Driver quality tends to vary. Some are good, some are not that good. In the latter case uninstall, revert and wait for the next version.

AFS2 - Hit or miss?

Aerofly FS2 has certainly created a stir these past months, including 15,624 hits on this post alone! But I'm wondering if it will continue to grow and thrive or if its already peaking in interest -as AFS1 did some years back.
I notice there have been no new AFS2 videos to speak of posted on youtube in the past week, and comments on flight forums are becoming sparse.

So is anyone still flying AFS2? and are you still hopeful that this sim will make the major league along with P3D etc.? I personally hope so because I think this sim has big potential, but I suspect we may have to wait another 4 years or so until future versions have enough bells and whistles to keep us hooked for good.

What Rob A. said ...

"Aerofly FS 2 is NOT a simulator in the traditional sense, but it is 64bit and it is fun. This is what DTG Flight products should have tried to be rather than going head to head with LM's P3D ESP code base. LM have 3+ years head start in ESP development with a much larger development group than any other flight sim product on the market.
Aerofly FS 2 is still a product "in development" ... I hope they progress and don't fall into the time warp of always being "almost done".

[Official] Aerofly FS 2 Update Version 2.0.1EA3.38

Dear Aerofly users,

here is a small update that fixes the following:

  • Fixed performance regression when using Oculus Rift with the native Oculus drivers
  • Improved cloud billboard rendering less sensitive to view direction changes
  • Added Numpad +-*/. as keys idependently assignable in control settings
  • Fixed key assigments with keys like [];',./ are saved correctly now

I notice there have been no new AFS2 videos to speak of posted on youtube in the past week, and comments on flight forums are becoming sparse.

Honestly flight sim forums and even many users appear quite resistant to anything not based off of FSX. Its like after 30 years of various Microsoft products (and modifications of same) the genre, at least as practiced by enthusiasts is in a very deep rut.

Look at the near euphoria caused by Flight School, and many sites almost instantly making the jump to establishing a forum for information about it to be gathered. We were drawn in by a well crafted campaign, and the end result was the extremely (IMHO) lackluster and problematical program known as flight school.

Its a program in its own way(s) even more limited than Aerofly, as far as system functionality as well as type and number of planes and, for me, has numerous issues. I won't write a book, but I could go on.

Yet enthusiasm for the DTG's upcoming sim is probably as high as ever because after all, its based on FSX and FSX is the cats meow, and..... maybe we'll find some way to make some of our old planes work, and if not, at least we'll have the same people and companies happily doing the same thing on a modified but familiar platform........

Why, it'll almost be as if nothings changed at all.

Yay?

Then, there are threads and conversations like this: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforu...ce-of-an-AeroFly-FS-2-topic-in-The-Simulators

I've seen similar requests on other forums, with similar reply's. The familiar venues seem to have scant enthusiasm.

I think Aerofly knows what its facing though, and they have a backlog of already well modeled planes from their RC catalog that could be converted, as well as lots of State and Country DLC they can push to avid VR enthusiasts if this market proves utterly resistant.

With their frequent updates and the way they're building an excellent reputation for responsiveness to customer input, I think they have a very firm base to build on even if the traditional niche sits on the fence.

There's a lot to what you've said, but I think it is simpler than just a love affair with FSX. In the past -- and I am going back two decades -- we've had a regular release of new Microsoft sims, each one effectively replacing the previous version. This makes it real easy to choose a sim, as there's really just one choice at any one time -- you can choose whether or not to update when the new version is released, and some people take a while to do so, but generally everybody had the same opinion of what represents the 'current' simulator. Recently, though, we've had some changes, which has really annoyed and confused some users, not so much because Microsoft isn't involved any more, but because there is no one true path.

I suspect that there are a lot of users who are waiting to see what rises to the top, and haven't had to consider that the market might be better-off a little fragmented. However although I'm happy to try any new sim -- my income requires me to keep up with the market -- I'm only really a one-sim guy. I think that most simmers are more so, as they don't really have any incentive to try new things.

Dovetail is in a great position where they can use FSX Nextgen name as a selling point, but I'm not really convinced that they can deliver something for everyone. They need a new type of customer, one who has grown up in a connected app world, and 'games' are fleeting past-times. Lockheed Martin have done a great job with their direction, but there's that awful 'what the hell' licensing, which leaves some users thinking that it isn't for them.

I haven't tried Aerofly simply because I'm too busy and too poor at the moment, but as soon as I have the time and disc space I'll be in. It could easily become a major contender, I'd love to look at developing scenery for it, it looks so great.

In the meantime, I get the impression that a lot of simmers are waiting for things to go back to the old days -- Microsoft realising their mistake, repurchasing FSX and getting back to normal:) It takes a while for people to accept something new, especially if there is more than one choice. In two or three years I would hope that it would be easier to know what's the current sim or sims, but I it is possible that Prepar3d is still the only 'finished' modern sim available, and unless they have a license option aimed firmly at FSX users, the user base will just move onto some other interest.

By the way, finding cool Aerofly vids isn't that hard.....

Yes I saw those vids last week but thought they looked a bit 'samey'. The lower video for example has so much masking effect you can hardly see the sim. Anyway its just that one guy posting occasional AFS2 videos on the entire channel.

Like I said, there have been very few AFS2 videos posted on youtube over the past week or so. Perhaps its just a blip and people really are 'flying' AFS2 regularly and not going off it. Dont get me wrong...I'm still a cheerleader for this sim. I'm just wondering if the likes of yourself and Lionheart are flying it regularly or have gone off the boil?

I fly regularly. I would probably have done some videos myself, but there is one guy running two channels that is absolutely spamming aerofly vids, and it's kind of sucking all the air out of the room.

I think he does a few vids a day!

Good to hear that you still fly AFS2 regularly. Now what about Lionheart? ;-)

Yes I think I know the guy you mean. They are pretty awful/silly videos though, with an average of only around 6 views per video, so we're scraping the bottom of the barrel so to speak. Compare this to three of four months ago when AFS2 vids would often get over 20,000 or more hits. Even allowing for the initial surge of interest when the sim was released, there does appear to be a definite decline in interest and activity, both on the video front, and on related forum discussions.
But I do hope AFS2 thrives, and is a keeper.
(My romance with AFS1 lasted only a few weeks before I lost interest and patience...mainly with the still-life frozen scenery. So I'm attempting to gauge how V2 is faring with users).

Yes, they are pretty awful videos, but they've effectively monopolized the Aerofly video medium. Why would anyone else do an LA landing video when he's done so many of them that everyone's become bored with the subject?

That overflow probably helps to drive down video interest, and even I, who would ordinarily have done a few more vids by now, am not going to throw something in there just to get lost amidst all his stuff.

As for forums, Flight School forums are about as dead. They come to life occasionally as the DTG guy pops in from time to time to let everyone know they're still alive, and try to keep the community invested, but that's his job.

My observation has always been that this hobby has cycles. Boredom interspersed with major releases that get everyone excited again, followed by lulls filled with testimonials, cries for help and bug reports.

FSX is upheld by literally dozens of companies that keep the pot boiling with near constant releases, which gives an appearance of movement even as the base software remains unchanged.

Aerofly simply isn't there yet, and can't possibly be until the SDK is out there and people start contributing. Even then, think of how long it's taken for the FSX market to reach the point that it has.

Unfortunately people keep looking at the end product of 30 years of development, and wondering why Aerofly, and soon, DTG Sim, can't match that, preferably the day after launch. This in a community where a decade later, FS9 is alive and well on many drives and in many hearts. This genre can definitely be a bit slow to accept change.

The inclination is to stay with what's working and what you know and are familiar with, and after being forced by circumstances to stay in a locked closet with MS products for the last decade, it's going to take a while for the recently released captive audience to learn to live in a world of choice again.

Major case of Stockholm syndrome.

Time is the cure, and Aerofly will just have to expand its market with newcomers and VR fans while Flight-simmers slowly accommodate its existence into the matrix of acceptable choices.

Meanwhile, Just as with Flight School, The Steam forums are becoming the place to go until other dedicated forums become available and achieve a critical mass of users driven by cycles of development.

I myself am eager for the promised new planes and scenerys, ATC and Ai and many other things mentioned by users and Ipac's
