• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Fantastic work Mr.FaosFX! :D

Thanks and I almost forgot. An export test...

Do you know what it's like when your cooking a good dinner. It's there cooking but you can taste it yet because it's not ready to eat. After this export, that is exactly how I'm feeling right now.

Compare the previous pics of the tail to this new export, quite a difference :)

I'm going to bed now, one more day of work, hopefully by this weekend I can have those wings ready.

And I'm sorry but I could not resist the temptation to do this.

LOL!! DC-8 Midget! --- Just for laughs!

Aside from the obvious reason for exporting early and often (to make sure it WILL export at all!), what you've expressed above is to me at least an even better reason...

...it helps to keep your motivation and energy level H I G H!

Watching your creation gradually take life in the sim is just SO motivating!

The reason I do exports once in a while is to observe if there are any errors. I modeled an aircraft once and had everything finished but I made a fatal mistake with the wings ... some how the wing that was the source of the mirror got deleted by me and mirrored again from an already mirrored wing!! When I exported to FS, I noticed both wings had that transparent strange look and then I realized what I did ... that project was going along well and then just like that, I stopped working on it ... the wing had so much detail, I couldn't think of going through all that again.

That's too bad, as there is a way to recover from such a mistake. It's a bit of a chore, but it does work most of the time... ;)

Well, you can attach the mirrored part to a cube and then detach it. That solves the inverted normal problem caused by mirroring.

If for any reason that doesn't work, then the other alternative is to Mirror the Mirrored objects. That normally will work as well.

Xpand and n4gix I did not know you could do those things. I will have to try this out today at some point, perhaps I can resurrect some projects laying around.

Well, I don't know if he used the mirror modifier or the evil mirror button on the tab. For the button that works. I tried it myself before knowing the mirror modifier.

It was the evil mirror tool button.

You know what is weird, I had a plane with fully animated flaps and when I mirrored the right side of the wing with all the flaps, the animations where all out of wack, I spent hours fixing the animations.

However, if you use the evil mirror tool, the right side mirrors correctly and so do the animations ... also, the mirror modifier doesn't work like the mirror tool ... sometimes the object you mirror does not mirror correctly but if you go to the tools roll out and click on reset transform and mirror it, it works ... I would like to know why this is so.

Well the animations are all wrong in the mirrored parts because the pivots stay in the position in which they were before the mirroring was done. That's why I delete all the animations before mirroring and then reanimate everything.
The mirror modifier mirrors along the part's axis (pivot) if nothing is done. If you click the "+" button on the green bar that says "mirror", select "mirror center" and put it on 0,0,0 the part will mirror correctly onto the other side. The reset transform simply moves the part's axis to 0,0,0.

Wouldn't a "flip polygons" on the newly mirrored object in emesh mode do away with the "the mirror button doesn't flip polys" issue?

Also, inb4Bill Leaming's "Proper object miroring in Gmax" tutorial.

By using a dummy animation you can mirror your parts from the modifier list and mirror the dummy parts with the evil mirror. Then just link up the parts and away you go.

DG:eek:

Guess what! I've just opened up the project in gMax :) time to get to work for the rest of the night, as usual an update will follow. I'll call it quits at around 5 am so from now to 5 am, that is 9 hours of 3d modeling and trust me, I probably won't get much completed as I get distracted watching videos and listening to music while I work on the DC-8 lol.

Alright, so now it is official, I am working backwards from the DC-8-73F all the way to the DC-8-10 and with the help of people how have enlisted to help, we shall release the models one by one as time grants.

So today I went ahead and did a critical operation. Currently, the model in gmax was GIAGIANTIC in Flight Simulator so I pulled up my DC-8-73F documentation at hand and make the neccessary adjustments to get the entire project to real aircraft dimensions.

Well what you guys are about to see is just SHOCKING, it left me with my tongue hanging in mid air as I observed.

On the top is the AeroSim Douglas DC-8-73F and my version is bellow it and I was just SHOCKED!!! To see that they are IDENTICAL!!! The dimensions are bloody accurate, I was expecting to see total chaos but there she is seating on the runway to correct specifications, tail, elevators, fuselage length ... holy crap!!

This excited me a lot today as a gmax modeler, my first real aircraft for the flight sim community and it appears that I'm nailing it dead on target.

I am very happy, this is a very exiciting moment for me!!

I will post updates on a week to week basis now to stop FLOODING/SPAMMING this thread with my updates. So you guys will get an update this week obviously but you wont see an update until the 17th or a week after that.

It is better this way instead of you guys coming in here to check to see if I have posted any updates or not and then find out I didn't because I see the thread has over 1,000+ views already.

Alright working on this madness from 11 pm to 5:20 am in the morning. I bet you guys are hoping I got a lot of work completed, well, not really. 3D modeling is very tedious work.

2058lzk.png

After all those hours this is how the tail section ended up. Note the orange lines that represent the spline work of what is to become a part of the aft fuselage section...I did this to create the flat area in which the elevators pivot and this time I finally nailed the son of a !!$^$%!

I had to tediously position lines and align them all precisely, this took a very long time but the results are worth it.

This is the update everyone gets for this week, next Saturday I will have another and it is possible that the next time you see the DC-8, the wings will be about 50% completed!! So keep tuned.

Go in peace, no need to check this thread again until the 17th or a week from now.

Later folks.

It's your thread, so spam away! I'm delighted to read about progress. :D

Btw: Never ever compare your sim model to sim model of others. You don't knowhow accurately "the others" have done theirs.

As long as your model delivers the same optical impression as a photo of the "real deal", you're fine. ;)
