• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Another look at how this is progressing...

nose2.png

I still need to fix up the geometry a bit to give it a better look,
more roundness I should say.

Next up is the entire nose cone area, this will take quite some time and I'll be pulling an all nighter on the nose section and top windows, hopefully by tomorrow I can have the nose section complete (again) and I can move to the tail section to keep adding more details.

HJG don't normally release paintkits, however if its been done by the designer and they want it released to painters then I have no problem with that:)

3:46 am and I just got done skinning that nose, almost done but I did fall asleep earlier, lol.

@tinypic.com
* the reason for the double images is, I think postimage.org is removing the images I upload!
* the tinypic.com image is there only as a backup, just to avoid any confusion, at some point the
postimage.org one may magically dissapear, if this happens, I'll stop using postimage.org

Still need to work out some mesh details with the nose cone and begin mating it with the nose section area. You can also see that some polys where removed at the top of the nose in preparation for the new slightly curved window at the top, also need to make it rounder.

The next update should be a very much completed nose section, so no updates, probably not till next Sunday.

Keep tuned for updates as usual!

The nose cone and parts in close proximity got finished just now, just minor work. No updates today, I spent the whole day yesterday watching Pro Stock, Nitro Funny cars and Top fuel dragsters and I have a mind blowing head ache ... today I have to go again to help out at the track ... so I must sleep, need to be at the track by 8 am today.

I'm going to be on Motrin the whole day to ease this head ache. I got some ear plugs for today but yesterday, I wanted to listen to the raw power of these machines and oh man, nastyyyy.

I'll keep you guys posted of any progress on the DC8, I will be working on the top portion of the nose, possibly on Sunday.

I might post some pictures of my day at the track if you guys would like to see that, get your minds of the DC8 and you get to see my other hobbies. Drag racing!

A word on the polls, since I'm part of the HJG group now, I need to find out if Tony the team owner wishes to go by these polls or make his own decision. Keep the votes coming but it seems that we have a very divided group of people ... again I see its 50/50 and it might actually turn out 50/50 given we already have a very good DC8 out.

That is good stuff Benoit :-]

A little update, I said there wouldn't be any till Sunday but this is just peek at how everything turned our at the top of the nose area.

I'm happy to have the nose back to 'almost' normal again. Just need to finish up work at the top and begin implementing the nose cone into the main nose fuselage mesh, will have more pictures of this completed work later.

That nose definitely looks challenging to get right. You're doing a great job on it so far!

You are right, it is very challening to get it right and I've redone it almost 3 times now but I've finally got it right this time, just finished with some major work.

Now, before you even comment on the following picture, lol ... what is that strange texture on the nose? It is just a technique I use to inspect final results, to give me an idea of what the nose would look like with a texture ... I look at it from all angles to see if I can see any smoothing errors, any major ones will show up but in this case, there are no smoothing errors and the nose just looks very soft which is what I want to see.

I'm going to leave it like this for now and come back to it later ... I'm moving off to the tail section to complete it, I always say I'm going to finalize the work back there but I get caught up doing something else.

Remember the texture is just there for inspection! lol

Another picture with ugly nose texture removed...

Get a load of how many recovers there have been, gmax is a really unstable application.

Later.

Time for todays update which, isn't much but finally the tail section area is being worked on.

You will notice in this picture now that it is addressed as HJG DC8-73F v2 as my series will serve as an update to their current models, this is designated version 2 now that I have joined HJG and this bird is under their name.

vhw9lf.png

The orange selection with vertices is demonstrating the connectors that run out from the tail fin and meet with the rudder [ the pivot points of the rudder, I should say] next comes the little trimtab and then I have to mate the tail with the fuselage, so that this bird is easy on the painters, that way nobody has to guess when painting a line up towards the tail.

Mostly all the work around the tail is just filling in open gaps. Keep tuned, I should have pics of the completed tail strike plate hump at the bottom of the fuselage on the next update and also, the 73F has a tail light at the rear aft, you'll see this too added.

Later folks, I'm am done for the day, heading out to eat and then, time to get ready to go to work to kick the week off.

QUESTION: I've been observing videos lately of DC8 take offs, the wing flex isn't really that defined even with a heavy load, the DC8 wing seems very hard and strong. I know there is some flex, I just don't have an idea of how much the wings actually do flex. I ask kind souls again here to do some searching for me as the work week is usually busy and I don't have time. Some comparison photos would be nice.

Update for today.

Two days ago HJG staff members got a close up look at the DC8 and took an exported test model out for a flight. Lot's of good feedback was returned and several corrections have been made over the course of the last two days.

You can see here a fully worked out DC8 nose, the inlet ports were corrected and the new top flight deck window added. Work on the aft section area will continue today.

Keep tuned for updates.

Later.

Work has completed for the tail and elevators, I just basically covered up areas where required, rounded the edges of the trip tab and elevators, among other things. Just some minor details that I will add later.

I'll model the tail strike plate next, not today but possibly tomorrow, should go fairly quick since its such a simple object. Then work will continue on the main fuselage and wing root areas to begin preparations to add the main landing gear and nose gears, should be another mile-stone when the gears are added.

Off to work now, later folks.

Nice, You almost done. with the exterioir

Almost but I've still got landing gears, nose gears, wheel wells, flaps, ailerons, gear doors, progress has been slow rather, as I've refined and corrected many parts over and over ... at least I'm not messing around with the nose anymore as its as accurate as it can be.

The promised update, note the newly added tail strike 'thingy' at bottom of fuselage, this is a fresh export. :-]

Aircraft selection dialog box showing the DC8, nice angle! Really captures the DC8 design very well!

- Joined fuselage parts together.
- Fixed wing root area.

Landing gears are coming!

Great Faosx, yes I like the preview window of fsx too, sure HJG and you will become a great team, y guess you are now looking at the wheel gear, I can see that all you first make all the airplane and then add the animations. curious.regards

I was under the impression that this was for FSX!

 I'm having a landing gear dilema. I have searched the net for DC8 landing gear but have been out of luck. I have created a fabulous pair of tires but now most of the photographs I have do not really show the inner workings of the landing gear assembly.

I have plenty of pictures at the top but not of the bottom. Anyone up for some searching? :-] I really need to get a good luck at the connecting assembly to the wheels, just need a nice clear picture ... come on guys, the faster you can all find one, the faster you guys can see landing gears on the DC8 :D lol
