• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Blender Texturing a 3D model in Blender, Please HELP!

Hi all,

I'm new to 3D modelling and texturing; after realising that placing objects into the sim is only a limited portion of scenery development...

A few months ago I completed the doughnut tutorial, then made this hut as my very first ever 3D Model... I think I made it far too detailed 😂 but I'm trying to push ahead with texturing it anyway.

I have run into this issue where some of the pieces aren't accepting the textures like the rest of the building, in the case of the window; the planks that I "removed" are still visible in the export.

Nowhere in Blender can I SEE the problem, only once it's exported (First image)

For comparison, this is what I can see in Blender (2nd, 3rd & 4th images)

(I understand the internal/underside components aren't showing textures because of the face orientation and having not modelled them.)

The textures used are just a placeholder until I get more accurate samples.

Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Warm regards,

Andrew

As always, post a zip of your blender file and someone might take a look at it. It's pretty much impossible to know what you have done otherwise. You could have misnamed textures, normals not pointing the right way, poor texture mapping, there's a near endless list of possibilities.

Secondly, please don't model the corrugations on corrugated iron. That's a great way to add a crap ton of polygons to your model. That's what normal maps are for.

Also, for which FS is this model for?

Blender uses OpenGL Normal maps. Most, if not all FS, use DirectX Normal maps. This means that the Y-axis (channel) needs to be flipped or inverted.

Sorry for such a delayed reply @Anthony31 and @Pyscen A mixture of things have had me away from my PC up till recently!

After creating this more basic model of an overflow the other day, I returned to the hut model and found...

Silly me, I had a bunch of unused components in my file structure... Despite turning them all off I managed to export them 🙄 That's what was causing the issues with the model and textures!

So modelling aside I'm back to toying with trying to texture the hut.

Thankyou again for your input @Anthony31 and @Pyscen I really appreciate your comments! I will be more aware of the poly count/detail in the future and the Normal map's orientation!

It's such early days for me and having so little experience in this area it's no easy task to get my head around...
